Training Overview

The training is based on the foundational teachings of the originator of EMDR therapy, Francine Shapiro, PhD. Participants will understand and practice core EMDR Therapy skills and procedures and will have the ability to expand these skills for use with a wide range of clinical presentations and situations.

Inspired EMDR’s training is thoughtfully designed to be personalized, comprehensive, and highly practical, so you can begin applying your new skills in your clinical work with confidence right away, You’ll benefit from individualized instruction and a low trainer-to-trainee ratio. With more time and attention tailored to you, you will more easily gain early confidence in practice.

This approach is guided by Cheryl Kenn, who was trained as a trainer in Francine Shapiro’s original model by Deany Laliotis, the former Director of Training at the EMDR Institute who was authorized by Dr. Shapiro. As a trainer, Cheryl remains deeply committed to honoring Dr. Shapiro’s original vision.

Cheryl carefully monitors all aspects of the training, providing continuous support and seamless integration across instruction, consultation, and practice. This personalized approach, with close supervision, supports how you apply EMDR in your real-life clinical work. This seamless integration of learning, practice, and real-client application helps you build a strong, confident foundation in EMDR therapy.

Unlike standard training formats, this training consists of four two-day sessions spread across the program. This paced structure aligns with established learning theory, which emphasizes that combining a layered curriculum with spaced repetition is the most effective strategy for mastering complex material. With minimal disruption to your schedule, you can gradually introduce EMDR into your practice at a comfortable rhythm, building your skills cumulatively.

Throughout the training, you will participate in 24 hands-on practice sessions, more than in standard formats, rotating through the roles of therapist, client, and observer. The extended schedule also gives you more time to assimilate new concepts in-between the four training Parts. This combination of ample in-training practice and real-world application helps you build stronger skills, smoother confidence, and better long-term mastery of EMDR therapy.

You will benefit from a wide range of high-quality learning materials designed to support your understanding and mastery of EMDR therapy. The training features clear and engaging video demonstrations, live demonstrations, and well-organized supplemental resources. Key concepts are presented in an easy-to-understand manner, with purposeful focus on the core EMDR principles throughout the program to reinforce learning, ensuring you gain both clarity and confidence in applying EMDR techniques.

All consultation is embedded in the training days and is covered in the tuition. You will not need to arrange or pay for outside consultation, removing common barriers and allowing you to focus fully on developing your skills.

In the afternoons, training participants practice EMDR methods as therapist, client and observer on self-selected issues to experience the application of EMDR. Case consultation on Days 3-8, is comprised of group discussion led by an Approved Consultant of clinical applications of EMDR therapy with clients.

This integrative module provides a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for understanding foundational EMDR dynamics. Participants will engage in a nuanced exploration of core theories, integrating contemporary research with established clinical models. Through a collaborative learning model, participants will master sophisticated  techniques and build robust, personalized intervention strategies.  I am committed to providing you with a solid foundation in the core elements of this powerful methodology.

The training integrates a hands-on practicum component throughout the curriculum consisting of a substantial amount of practice in experiential EMDR sessions. A core requirement in supervised practice involves assuming the roles of the therapist, client and observer, ensuring comprehensive skill development in all aspects of the process. Participants will be asked to apply the EMDR procedures on self-selected disturbing issues. Emotional material may arise during and after the practice. Therefore, prior to registering, it is important to consider that it is essential that the training participant possesses adequate capacity for emotional regulation available throughout the training as well as access to supports as needed.

FAQs

An EMDRIA Approved EMDR Basic Training is a valuable distinction that affirms that your foundation in Basic Training meets the rigorous international standards for curriculum, instruction and consultation. Completing an EMDRIA Approved program is a strict prerequisite if you plan to acquire advanced credentials like formal EMDR Certification designation or become a Consultant able to grant EMDRIA credits for consultation to consultees.

Why taking an EMDRIA approved training matters:
  • Prerequisite for Certification: If you want to become a fully Certified EMDR Therapist, you must start with an EMDRIA Approved program; non-approved courses will not count toward these future career milestones.
  • Mandatory Consultation: Approved programs require 10 hours of supervised case consultation, ensuring you learn to apply the EMDR standard protocol as well as it’s modifications for special populations and situations, safely and ethically with real clients.
  • Professional Credibility: An EMDRIA Approved curriculum grants clinical competency that is recognized by insurance panels, employers, and the broader trauma-treatment community.
  • Quality Assurance:  You receive a complete foundational framework grounded in the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, preventing clinical complications down the road. Non-standardized trainings may lack in many areas, most importantly, in fidelity to the core tenants of EMDR.

Basic Training vs. Certification are separate designations. Completing an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training qualifies you as a clinician “trained in EMDR Therapy”. EMDR Certified Therapist is an advanced designation that demonstrates the clinician has higher competency. Certification requirements include:

  • Full independent licensure in your state/province
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience
  • Completion of an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training (20 hours didactic + 20 hours supervised practice + 10 hours consultation)
  • 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 different clients
  • 20 hours of consultation with an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant (at least 10 hours individual)
  • 12 hours of EMDRIA-approved continuing education
  • Letters of recommendation from two EMDRIA-Approved Consultants

Note: Newly trained clinicians qualify for discounted EMDRIA membership (within one year of Basic Training). Interns may join as associates and upgrade to full membership after licensure. Full details: www.emdria.org

We understand that scheduling conflicts and unexpected circumstances can sometimes prevent a participant to attend some of the training, missing part of all of a training day.
The training course combines lecture and hands-on practice, with each day building cumulatively on the previous one. Because of this progressive structure, it is not possible to make up missed days or partial days and continue the training. EMDRIA and CE governing bodies require full attendance for completion and credit. Therefore, any scheduled or unscheduled absences will require the participant to transfer to a future training (subject to availability). All training must be completed within one year. It is important to ensure full availability on all training days prior to registering.

  • Practical forms are provided to assist with documenting and organizing your clinical work.

This structure is designed to ensure a seamless and comprehensive training experience with no hidden fees.
